Networking Presentation Handout
This is one of the many handouts that I have used when I give short talks about
networking.  I customize my talks and handouts to be more relevant to the needs
of each audience, and I like to leave with something to take home.  You can tell
who I was talking to when I made this particular talk!

Spoon Havoc, (2004-2006) an irregular single pane cartoon in The Chattanooga
Pulse, an alternative news weekly.  "Irregular" in terms of frequency and content
(offbeat, P.C., G-rated).  I had planned for years to use the title "Non-Sequitur",
but someone beat me to getting it copyrighted.  I also did four of five lead
editorial panes.  You can see a few samples of my cartoons by clicking

Cairns, A.B., (1995)
Communication of Information and Adaptation to Disability,
University of Georgia, Masters Thesis.  My thesis is on file with the University of
Georgia and the Department of Speech Communication.  I explored locus of
control and its effect on the speed and progression of the stages of adaptation to
spinal cord injury with permanent paralysis.  I had two groups, "recently injured"
and "old injury."  I also asked open-ended questions that allowed the themes
and experiences to emerge on their own.  Many interesting themes did emerge,
including just how severely isolating extreme events are for people, and how they
handle it.  I also found some interesting characteristics regarding the roles played
by friends, family, and caregivers.

Nonverbal Rapport-
Building Behavior's Effects on Perceptions of a Supervisor
, Management
Communication Quarterly, Sage Publications, Inc.  I received a one quarter
stipend to assist professors in getting study materials ready for publication.  This
article is based on masters thesis work from Mark Heintzman and explored how
certain types touching behaviors at work impact supervisor-employee perceptions
and dynamics.

Instructor's Manual for Persuasive Communication
Campaigns
(Pfau & Parrott) Allyn & Bacon, Boston, MA.  This instructor's manual
accompanied a textbook and included content summaries, classroom activities,
exercises, and test items.  Maggie and I each wrote half of it.
